Optical Clock Multipliers

Optical Clock Multiplier

PriTel’s OCM Series of Optical Clock Multipliers are designed for applications in high-capacity fiberoptic communications research at 1550 nm. Based on OTDM (optical time-delay multiplexing), these passive multiplexers increase the pulse rate of input signals by factors of 2, 4, 8, or 16 for RZ input-pulse frequencies of 10 GHz to 40 GHz.

PriTel's OCM is often used in Bit Error Rate Testing of 27-1 bits at 40 GHz with a 10 GHz input. For other bit patterns and input repetition rates, the reconfigurable version of the OCM is available.

Output frequencies up to 320 GHz have been achieved with PriTel's OCM. For example, see S. Nakamura, Y. Ueno, and K. Tajima, "Error-free all-optical demultiplexing at 336 GB/s with a hybrid- Integrated Symmetric-Mach-Zehnder Switch," Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC 2002), March 17-22, 2002, Anaheim, Postdeadline Paper FD3.

OCM RF Suppression

In OTDM applications, it is important to suppress the input repetition rate in the output signal. PriTel's OCM maintains an output-to-input signal ratio >35 dB, as shown in the RF spectrum on the left. This high performance is achieved through PriTel's design and construction techniques.
